Dealing with things that leave an unpleasant mark in life is hard for most of us. While some can bounce back and get on with dear life, others get stuck in a constant loop of sorrow. If you’re one of the unfortunate ones, this post will help you learn how to let go of toxic things in life.
Whether it’s an ended relationship or a death in the family, the memories can haunt you forever. Not everything comes to an end how you expect. You cannot undo or erase those memories. Rather, you can just let go.
Why Letting Go is Important
An average person’s life is full of ups and downs. Where there is good, there is bad. Where there is happiness, there is sorrow. And you have nothing to do but to cope with it.
The problem occurs when you cannot. A particular event or a series of events might change the course of your life. And it makes a bigger impact when there’s negativity involved. The most common case is heartbreak.
When the person is not in your life who you loved a lot, it’s normal to feel down and sad. But life must go on. And so you need to get everything together and be happy again. I sure hope my little tips will help you in the process.
Make the Choice on How to Let Go
As humans, we are fortunate enough to make free choices. And when it comes to letting go, you need to make the choice. Nothing is stronger than your willpower. So, your first step is to let go.
If it’s a heartbreak you are dealing with, believe that whatever happens, happens for the better. If you’re the one who made the decision, credit yourself for taking the right decision. If it was the other party, grant them the gratification that they have made the right choice for themselves.
An important lesson here is to cut the communication. A lot of people might think that keeping a friendly relation will help you both overcome the past, but it’s a rarity. Keeping in contact with your ex will do you more harm than good in the long run.
If it’s a death, accept the reality. No one will remain forever in your life. As harsh as it may sound, it’s the biggest truth of life. Sometimes, mother nature becomes so ruthless and cuts our happy journeys short. But you are not above nature.
Accept what it is. Choose how to let go. You can do it.
Focus on Your Life
If you are a working professional, the unpleasant things you are dealing with must have interfered with your work. It’s time to get back on track. Finish all the matters in hand. Even work harder to make a better future for yourself.
If you’re a student, focus on your studies. Complete the assignment you’ve been delaying for the last year. Study harder for a better grade. The things you learn will stay with you forever, even when people don’t.
Give Yourself Time
When you’re learning how to let go, it’s important that you don’t get harsh on yourself. If something is not working or you’re falling behind on your schedule, understand that it’s all normal. After all, you are a human being. And humans are not above emotions.
Treat yourself whenever you can. Take a break from work and go on a vacation. Spend quality time with yourself. If you are doing something wrong, be gentle with yourself when coming out of the habit.
It all takes time. And it’s all worth it in the end.
Develop a Hobby
Whatever your unpleasant memory is, developing a new hobby could be an amazing way to let it go. It might be gardening, it might be music, or might simply be chilling out with some Netflix. Just don’t let your brain sit idle and sob over what is not in your life anymore.
How to Let Go? Practice Mindfulness!
When we say let go, we mean to let go of something in the past. In almost all cases, the unpleasant thing that is bothering you would be from the past. So, it’s important to bring yourself in the present and let go of the past.
Mindfulness is probably the best way to calm your mind and bring it to the present. Mindfulness is the practice of bringing your mind and body together and observe your surroundings. It can often be achieved through meditation.
Set aside a time for yourself. Relax and get into the most comfortable position for yourself. Breathe in deep to stabilize your nerves. Now, start to observe what’s around you. Observe how you are feeling. How the air is touching your skin. How the slightest sound creates vibrations in your ear.
All of it will help you bring your mind back to the present rather than wandering off into an unpleasant memory.
Keep Your Expectations in Check
More often than not, expectations bring disappointment. But it doesn’t mean you should stop expecting. Expectation keeps relationships strong. But going over the top is where the problem lies.
Understand that everyone and everything has limitations. Nothing will go according to exactly what you expect. Having realistic expectations from people and life is the best lesson when learning how to let go.
I can’t put enough emphasis on the importance of forgiveness. And you need to forgive. Whether it’s people or situations, don’t let them take the toll on you. Only focus on what you think is best for you. Think of the unpleasant situations as inferior and let them go.
How to let go? Just let go. Let go of anything that’s been bothering you. Let go of anything that’s been keeping you away from yourself. Focus more on what you want in life. How you can make your life better.
